The newly identified virus, or COVID-19, has been registered in a Halton Region resident as a case of the novel coronavirus. The Halton Region’s Emergency Operation Centre confirmed the patient to be the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
The patient is not in hospital.
On Monday, the new variant was detected in three additional cases in the region’s medical records.
The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is now associated with nine confirmed cases in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario
The Omicron variant of COVID-19 identified in British Columbia is a previously undiscovered subtype. It is also not found in previous reported cases of the new virus.
These are the province’s new cases and the first new cases to be linked to the COVID-19 virus in Canada. The provinces have identified two deaths related to COVID-19 as well as many other cases.
The Omicron variant of COVID-19 is the first COVID-19 variant to be linked to a Canadian case outside of China. It was also the first COVID-19 variant linked to a case in the United States, which has since identified its first confirmed case of the virus there.
