Serena Williams teases return to competitive tennis, says Tom Brady ‘started a really cool trend’
She told the paper her schedule is “very loose” right now.
Serena Williams announced her return to the competition circuit in September after five months out with an Achilles tendon injury. During her absence, she participated in the US Open and Australian Open before retiring from professional tennis at the start of the year.
“I am not playing for money,” she told the BBC in September after announcing her comeback. “I am playing so that I can compete and not be out there only for appearances and all that. I want to compete, enjoy it, then get back in the training and then go to the matches.”
Williams is currently ranked No. 2 in the women’s singles tennis world rankings, having been in the top three the past three weeks. She will also be in action at Wimbledon, where she has a chance of upsetting the No. 1 seed, Serena Williams.
She is also in the midst of a US Open semifinal and a Brisbane International final with sister Venus, who plays in the women’s doubles with Anna Kournikova. After the US Open, Serena will return to Brisbane to play in the doubles with her partner Venus Williams.
Williams spoke on the BBC about whether she is a “sensation on and off court,” and said she is more confident at this juncture of her career than she was last year when she was competing at Grand Slam events.
“I am a little bit more confident because I have been able to kind of go back into a normal routine,” she said. “I’ve lost quite a bit of my strength. I’ve been able to let my body recover, build strength, and then get back into playing tennis.
“I have had to adjust the tennis schedule with my daughter. She’s now at college over here, so I am now able to fit it in between what she’s doing over here.”
Asked if she is a sensation on and off the court, Williams answered: “Definitely not. I was a sensation. Now I’m just another player who plays tennis. I never really thought of myself being a sensation, but, it’s just that now that I’m back into the tournament circuit, I am not just playing tennis.”
