One of the three men charged with capital murder in the shooting of University of Virginia running back Terrance McNeil was arrested just before the former Virginia star took a shot that hit him in the shoulder.

But according to the mother of the victim, he was shot during a struggle after a person with the gun pointed him out of the way of a planned shooting.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Virginia coach Mike London said McNeil’s family had been informed about the shooting and ‘we are working with them to keep them updated as things progress.’

‘We continue to pray for Terrance and his family and we will continue to keep them updated as the investigation continues,’ London said.

‘Thank you for your patience and support as we deal with this tragic incident.’

McNeil’s mother, Shanna McNeil, told the Press-Gazette that her son had been a rising star at Virginia and was looking forward to leaving school at the end of the semester.
