The Los Angeles Airport System Receives $1-Million in Donations for its New Headquarters

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Airport System received a $1-million donation, its largest ever, for what is expected to be the airport’s new headquarters.

The airport system’s director of communications, Patrick Leahy, said the donation from the family of Gloria Allred also included a $250,000 gift to the agency.

The airport’s $1-million donation is one of about two dozen in the United States that is home to a major donation from the family of the late Melrose Hill resident Gloria Allred. The airport, an L.A.-San Francisco International Airport, which also includes runways for both of the largest airports in the world in Los Angeles and San Francisco, will be located on the airport’s old parking lot on Melrose Hill Drive.

Allred, the daughter of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and a granddaughter of Los Angeles Mayor Phil Owen, was one of the more prominent figures advocating for the homeless and other causes in the city.

The Allred family, which has been involved with the airport for more than a century, has given more than $2-million in donations going back to the time it purchased Melrose Hill at the corner of Melrose and Madison for $1 and built the first building there. Allred’s family had hoped to be the building’s developers.
