The Royal Suite at the Grosvenor House Hotel

Luxury atop one of the world’s tallest hotels

In a land where even the stars appear to travel on private jets, the Royal Suite at the hotel where Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cornwall, and wife Sophie waited for the Queen’s return from London has the trappings of a palatial residence by any definition of the word.

The Royal Suite is the only one of more than 1,000 rooms in the Grosvenor House hotel chain to have been equipped with luxurious fixtures and fittings, including an en-suite bathroom with a Jacuzzi bathtub. Among those who have used it are George II, Queen Victoria, King George V, and Kaiser Wilhelm II. The suite’s designer has been awarded a design prize, and his name – James Stirling – is inscribed next to a blue plaque on the wall of the reception room, where Princess Diana chose to stay for the week of her wedding to Dodi Fayed, and where she and Dodi then watched the royal wedding on television.

The suite has also been furnished with rare paintings by Claude Monet and Gustave Courbet, from the Prado, as well as a 17th-Century Baroque carved door that is painted by French artist Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Bédier. In a land where even the stars appear to travel on private jets, the Royal Suite at the hotel where Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cornwall, and wife Sophie waited for the Queen’s return from London has the trappings of a palatial residence by any definition of the word.

It also has a bathroom, and a bed – as opposed to a chaise longue in which Princess Diana slept when she was alone in the suite.

The suites in the Grosvenor House hotels are the only ones in a chain of properties that still advertise the service of a Royal Guest, and the only ones in a chain known to have a full-time staff of two.
