Donna Vekic will retire with some unfinished business when she hosts Guadalajara in the final of La Liga on Saturday evening. But it will be one of her two final games at the iconic Estadio Azteca that will be the most emotional.
The Croatian forward is one of the Premier League’s top scorers – this season with 22 – and has been a key part of the Croatian resurgence in Spain, helping them win back-to-back league titles and reach the European Under-21 Championships.
La Liga’s most unlikely players – The stats
36 – The number of goals scored by Vekic this season, which is the most in the top flight.
13 – The numbers of games played for Vekic this season.
5 – The number of games for Vekic in the Champions League this season.
3 – The number of appearances for Vekic for Real Madrid.
21- The number of goals Vekic has scored in La Liga this season.
16 – The number of goals Vekic has scored for Croatia, which is the most by a Croatian in the top flight.
17 – The number of goals scored by Vekic for Real Madrid this season.
Donna Vekic has scored 18 of the goals in the Champions League for Real Madrid this season.
This will be the last time Vekic plays in front of the Estadio Azteca. This is the third spell of her career at the stadium for the Croatian: the first time she played a Serie A game, then the 2012 European Under-21 Championships.
The 31-year-old forward will face off with a Real Madrid player for the first time in her career in front of the world’s most recognisable stadium.
The game will also mark Vekic’s first opportunity to face Real Madrid in front of a Real nation since she was voted Best Player at the Club’s 2011/12 UEFA Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona.
Vekic will be a spectator for the first time since the 2011 Women’s World Cup final, when she played for Croatia and was a sub for Germany.
