Rafael Nadal says he and his family are ‘very well’ after birth of first child
Nadal (31) and his wife, Eleni, have announced the arrival of son Noah in New York City, and are both excited about the future.
They are expecting another daughter, Laila, in November.
Nadal’s father and stepmother were involved in a fiery car accident in July, and he says they have had ‘a lot of surgeries’.
He was expected to be back at the French Open in September having undergone surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff, but he has been sidelined since that time.
Asked about his father Rafael Nadal, whose real name is Roberto Carlos Marti, says he and his family are’very well’, adding: ‘We don’t have any health problems.’
‘We were very happy when I told him we were having a baby and everything looked normal. Nothing has changed.’
‘I’ve had a lot of surgery and a lot of people have congratulated me, so I’m happy my son is healthy. My father is very happy too.’
‘If you were a tennis player back then and you wanted to come and beat me, you couldn’t have given me a better present.’
According to the Mirror, Rafael was involved in a car crash in July and is expected to be out of action for approximately four months after hip surgery.
In a statement Nadal was quick to praise his father following the birth of their son.
“I would like to send my love to my father, he’s a great person. We’re very well. We don’t have any health conditions. We’re very happy, especially with the joy of the birth of our son.
‘After my surgery in Paris I had a lot of problems, my hips are a little worse than what they were, but we got through it. I’m very happy. My father is very happy, I’ve been with him on two holidays and he’s very happy. Now, he’s back in the world (society) and we have a healthy baby together.”
Greeted by warm cheers and a band, Rafael was then led to the courts on Thursday in a wheelchair.
A few hours later he spoke to reporters about the birth of his son
