Rafael Nadal became the first player to ever break Roger Federer’s career Grand Slam winning streak in the US Open and beat Fabio Fognini in the first round.

Nadal defeated the Italian on Centre Court Saturday, winning 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to claim the opening set.

Nadal broke Federer’s record of 22 Grand Slam singles championships while Nadal moved into a tie on the all-time Grand Slam doubles list.

Nadal broke Federer’s record in singles in each of his first three Opens, in 2009 and 2012 and again in 2014.

Rome – Rafael Nadal will not stop there. He will also become the first player in history to break Roger Federer’s 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

Nadal broke Federer’s record of 22 Grand Slam singles titles in each of his first three open-form US Opens, in 2009 and 2012 and again in 2014.

Nadal was a Grand Slam singles runner-up at the 2014 US Open against Kevin Anderson, only to miss out on becoming the first man to reach the top of the rankings.

The Spaniard will now attempt to become the first man to reach the all-time Grand Slam doubles list. Federer and Nadal have shared 22 Grand Slam doubles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the Davis Cup.

Nadal said, “I have to say I tried to do it in three years but it was never the same, so maybe we will try it now.”

Nadal has gone on to win four of the last five Grand Slam doubles titles (Wimbledon, US Open, French Open and Australian Open).
